An AI news competitor - The Deep View

Since I'm into writing this blog for the fun (and not for the money) I'm happy to share with you another AI news source in simple English - The Deep View - also on X (Twitter)

Guidelines, regulation, Diversity

The good news is that many Western countries are getting serious about guiding or regulating the AI industry.  G-7 Plans to Ask AI Companies to Agree to Watermarks, Audits  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-06/g-7-plans-to-ask-ai-makers-to-agree-to-watermarks-audits The less good news is that the US (where most of Big Tech is centered) wants "guidelines " and self-regulation while the EU and Japan are going for enforceable laws. Ai regulation kicking in (UK)

The UK information commissioner has sent a warning notice to the makers of Snapchat about its AI chatbot's dangers for children  Snap Gets Enforcement Notice From UK Watchdog on AI Chatbot  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-10-06/snap-receives-enforcement-notice-from-uk-watchdog-on-ai-chatbot There will have to be a lot more regulation awareness and intervention.

IBM’s interesting approach to AI

IBM was for 50 years (1940-1990?) the world’s  biggest manufacturer of computers, mostly for business. they made a 15 year foray into the world of personal computers, but went back to being a company that offers products and services to business users. Like most everyone else in the computer world now, they are working on AI based services. They realize that there are huge copyright issues with AI so they recently announced.(New York Times) that they will indemnify their business uses for any  copyright claims made on them for the use of IBM’s AI services IBM Tries to Ease Customers’ Qualms About Using Generative A.I. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/28/business/ibm-ai-data.html?unlocked_article_code=1ygz35vx4DUSRg7Y_yTpxowhmEtYltGI65BGoQIFaS2Xu5g_kfr2TjVr-Ueop1V3ruPg9P5OAlc4fGr3HtjFpkzdfGsWZSIu9xpb2ZcOkMZmOQv4fT1sySMgLjMMjFQR-6O8fFVrzTeM14SP5RLUstvB_4cECfB8DWPo-1J0m7J962LJOjOgWnCVcFRldX6q9ySCQ3PrZmnNkr1DJfuBWKdqsyPXklk_YgUTzK0xY6yyaejhO_KQ9qhoRs0qqRHf5aeFcLlbZ2klK-bgPJ2X...

Amazon arriving in the AI space

If you're a Tech giant like Amazon, you can't afford  not to be in the AI space. Amazon is a late starter but trying to catch up. Here's a link to a free Amazon Web Services AI seminar https://aws.amazon.com/events/innovate-online-conference/emea/for-every-app/agenda/?trk=78dcd973-013d-47ad-af86-41f0205066a7&sc_channel=psm&fbclid=IwAR2Kx0cuEsLjTjF7N7dxP42l2xhhJSEBcvfYN9H5Yeud_kdlRXUXMAsOs20

AI in education (Australia)

Education Ministers in Australia have agreed to a framework for the use of conversational AI (ChatGPT style) in all Australia's schools from the first term of 2024. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/oct/06/chatgpt-ai-allowed-australian-schools-2024?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other It sounds like a sensible approach.  For all its huge potential dangers,it's her to stay. So better to try to understand the potential risks and benefits  and then implement AI in schools in a controlled way. As AI is moving so fast, the Australian education system will have to be very fast on its feet to spot new opportunities and dangers as they arise, and deal with them.  Good luck!

Van Gogh talks to museum visitors

In many ways it's very appealing. If you are a museum director you would want your visitors to get the fullest and most meaningful experience out of their visit. So the idea of creating an AI video of Van Gogh talking to museum visitors make sense. https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/oct/02/ai-vincent-van-gogh-talks-of-mental-health-struggles-in-paris-exhibition?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other  On the other hand, to me, It seems rather spooky. Faking people on video or in conversations or books is very problematic, and can and will be abused. The million dollar question is how to decide and regulate what is appropriate and what isn't.

Limiting the creative misuse of AI

Authors and actors have been finding out that people have been ripping off their work , talent and reputation to make money. It is also worryingly easy to create and publish fake material. It takes very little effort to create, publish and sell books written by AI on Amazon’s self-publishing platform KDP. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/sep/20/amazon-restricts-authors-from-self-publishing-more-than-three-books-a-day-after-ai-concerns?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other Amazon is now trying to plug the breach by limiting “authors” from publishing more than 3 books a day (imagine!) on KDP.  AI fakery is starting to starting to pollute the world and it will get worse before (hopefully) it is controlled by regulation or legislation

The uses and perils of AI 2023

Consider this . In 2021 the actor Tom Hanks agreed to (maybe even encouraged) the use of AI ( at the state it then was) create a younger version of himself for the (excellent) film “A Man called Otto”. Now, 2023, he discovers that a fake version of himself has been used in an ad for dental care - see https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/oct/02/tom-hanks-dental-ad-ai-version-fake?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other It is getting easier by the day to create deepfakes (my bank ‘created’ a fake video of Warren Buffet talking to the bank’s clients). Yuval Noah Harari has said that creating fakes of people should be classified as a crime as  serious as counterfeiting money. It’s a question of trust which is the glue that keeps a modern, interconnected, interdependent society going

Welcome to David Lisbona’s AI developments blog

This blog is started in October 2023 . Some of the first posts may relate to earlier developments. What this blog is and what it isn't It's current industry news about what's happening in the AI space , what the big players are doing and what new features and capabilities they are rolling out. These are moving very fast. It is not a general primer on AI, nor philosophising about how the world will look (for better or worse) when AIs take over or in 10 years time. It is also not a detailed guide or tips on using the various AI platforms. For that , go to my companion blog - David's AI tips .   It's just starting these days so not much there yet. You are welcome and invited to send questions, comments or suggestions to David Lisbona at dlisbona@gmail.com Enjoy!

iHuman - 2020 film about AI

A friend recommended this 1 hour 50 minute 2020 film about how to but artificial intelligence. I could only find this 12 minute segment on YouTube https://youtu.be/JXjFtbTAA8Q?si=TQAzZt78g-KEb1Y2 The photography is beautiful but the clip didn't tell me much but I didn't know call my namely that a it's going to change the world and is unstoppable. What I did learn is the term AGI which stands for artificial general intelligence which is 12 or 20 levels above the first conversational AI platforms such as Chat GPT and Bard that have become widely available during 2023. Unless really good regulation is put in place before AGI comes on the scene that will be a turning point for Humanity. If anyone knows where I can get hold of a copy of the IHuman film, please let me know  David Dlisbona@gmail.com

Meta AI rollout

Meta, Facebook parent company ( which was so called because Mark Zuckerberg thought the Metaverse would be the next big thing) has announced its initial public AI rollout. It's called Meta AI and, unlike CHATGPT and Bard that were released on open access by the public straight off, Meta is going slowly. It will initially only be available in the USA. Meta AI will, of course be available on Meta's messaging platforms- WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram ensuring availability for millions of people. To access it on WhatsApp (in the U S A) click on the icon to create a new message , and the fourth button should enable you to request access as a beta user. Meta has also promised future AI integration with its Questa VR headsets and Ray Ban smart glasses.
